We had a great AEUS-SonoRoundtable Journal Club covering point-of-care ultrasound for appendicitis. We covered 2 papers, Fox et al., Prospective evaluation of emergency physician performed bedside ultrasound to detect acute appendicitis., and Sivitz et al, Evaluation of acute appendicitis by pediatric emergency physician sonography.

We started the session with a brief didactic by Kennedy Hall MD, reviewing the basic ultrasound technique, anatomic landmarks, and pathologic signs.

Joe Pare MD reviewed Fox et al., Prospective evaluation of emergency physician performed bedside ultrasound to detect acute appendicitis. We were joined by Chris Fox to discuss his experience performing the study and tips and tricks he picked up along the way.

Andrew Taylor reviewed Sivitz et al, Evaluation of acute appendicitis by pediatric emergency physician sonography. Adam Sivitz, the lead author, reviewed his experience in performing ultrasound studies in pediatric patients.

We had a great discussion about other studies, as well as directions for future research and how to incorporate these studies into clinical practice.
